WINCO CONDAR'S INTERPLANETARY SPACEMEN - MAKER? - ENGLAND

A set of four hard (dense, not brittle) plastic spacemen. The oddly-named "Winco Condar's Interplanetary Spacemen" set dated to 1953. The figures are obviously Lido inspired, but there's no manufacturer's name on the card.

It is believed that the figures are a knock-off of Captain Condor, a space hero in a strip from The Lion comic. Winco is an abbreviation of the RAF rank of Wing Commander and "Condar" is clearly a variation of "Condor" designed to avoid copyright issues. Like so many of the early English plastic toys, they were on sale in Woolworths.

The figures were almost certainly made in England rather than imported. They are made from plastic, but are not those hard plastic Lido ones that clink.
