robothut
Most vintage Non fall toys had a Balance beam skids in the front, followed by a wheel mounted at a right angle to spin the toy if either of the balance bean drags drop off a edge. The toy is normally propelled by a single drive wheel, if both rear wheels were driven the toy would not turn very well just like cars with locked differentials. Then the batteries are mounted in the rear of the toy to act as a counterweight. They want to keep the front as light as possible, so the balance beam drags do not have so much friction as to make the toy want to turn all the time "do to the single drive wheel. But they need enough weight so that when the front balance beam skids to fall that the right-angle drive wheel has enough friction "grip" to spin the toy away from the edge. The vintage toys were built with carbon batteries in mind for the balance. New batteries weight a lot more so the toys do not always work as designed unless you buy the lightest cheap dollar store batteries you can find.
