'AURORA' EXPEDITION CAR - YONEZAWA - JAPANA most unusual combination of two linked space exploration tanks. The boxed set comprises two light blue lithographed tin battery operated tanks. The lead tank has a small forward clear plastic dome with driver and has working tracks to provide movement. The second tank is similar in style but has tin litho tracks rather than working ones. It, too, has a small dome with pilot.

The name and box art suggest Arctic exploration but this is regarded as being a space toy. The box has both a Yonezawa and a KDP logo.

1001 UTOPISCHES FAHRZEUG UTIOPIAN VEHICLE SPACE CAR - PIKO - DDRPlastic space car. Angular design with a cylindrical top. Cockpit and driver at the front of the cylinder. Two prominent streamlined headlight farings on the hood. Battery operated bump and go action. Marked CCCP on the side, though the toy was manufactured in the DDR (GDR). A-1 SPACE CAR - ASAKUSA - JAPANThis is a very large low profile, rectangular tin lithographed space vehicle. The red and cream car has two rear fins at the sides and a tail fin. At the front is a clear plastic dome containing a tin astronaut. The astronaut sits behind a cylindrical red plastic cockpit light. A small chrome front bumper contains two amber lights. Marked A-1 Car at the front and Space Patrol on the sides. Battery operated bump and go action with a flashing red light in the cockpit.

An early example carried the Emperors date 40-9-8 which is eight of September 1965.

This is an unusual cross between a jet plane and a spaceship, The deep sided red metal body is capped with a brightly lithographed jet plane top. The plane has two rear wings, two smaller front fins and a tail fin with Saturn graphics. ARCTIC EXPLORER SLED - BANDAI FOR SEARS - JAPANA large blue painted catamaran style pressed steel vehicle. with wings and propellers. This unusual vehicle has two long pontoons joined by a red central platform and topped with a futuristic wing-like bridge structure. Engines with propellers are fixed on either side of this wing. The ship carries a helicopter fitted with floats. 19" 47cm.

The scale of the toy is designed to create the impression of a massive vehicle. It is a borderline space piece but has a futuristic appearance that appeals to space collectors.

ARCTIC MISSILE TRACKING STATION - BANDAI FOR SEARS - JAPANA large pressed metal Arctic explorer vehicle. This complex vehicle is a massive half-tracked truck with a forward cockpit and an assembly of equipment on a rear platform, including a satellite dish and a jet engine styled attachment on wires. Unusually the front wheel consists of one long roller, presumably to avoid sinking into snow.

Battery operated forward and backward motion.

This is a borderline space toy but its futuristic appearance appeals to many space toy collectors.

ATOM NEW SPACE TANK - YOSHIYA - JAPANThis space toy calls itself a space tank but looks is more like a space car with its rounded lines. The box name may actually be ATOM IN SPACE CAR. It uses some components from Yoshiya's friction tanks. The red lithographed tinplate vehicle has porthole detailing and a large atom symbol on the hood. Marked Atom New Space Tank. There's a large plastic dome on top containing a yellow tin astronaut working the controls. This 6" 15cm toy has a friction crank operated mystery action. KO Box? Date?

A toy similar to this is featured in the 1965 Yoshiya catalog as #1085 SPACE SCOOTER.

The unique feature of this tank like vehicle is the clear plastic hopper filled with colored beads that are shaken as the tank moves. This inverted cone structure sits behind a clear plastic dome with a red tin astronaut inside. The pilot is none other than Billy, the Masudaya astronaut found clinging to a rocket and a flying saucer, therefore sometimes called Billy's Space Car. Modern Toys.

BATMAN CAR WITH SIREN - YANOMAN - JAPANA small six inch red lithographed tinplate car with a large vinyl figure of Batman. The car has copious litho detailing including bat logos and a pattern of concentric circles with a design that I can't work out on top of the car. Batman is manufactured in green vinyl with a blue cape. The car bears a resemblance to the S-17 Space Scout shape though it is much smaller. Friction action with siren noise. Featured in the 1970 Yanoman catalog where it is described as a new item. bat man.

BATTERY OPERATED SPACE SHIP ME-102 - CHINATin battery operated styrofoam ball blowing vehicle. The flat car shaped vehicle has a rear tail fin and a clear plastic canopy containing a pilot. A tube emerges from the top and a stream of air supports the styrofoam ball. 32cm Red and blue litho versions. This is a copy of the Holdauto design.

BUDDY "L" ROBOTOY TRUCK - BUDDY - USAA large 21" pressed steel truck. Red and green paint. Electric powered, it connects to the mains and runs off a transformer that plugs into the roof. Actions include forward, reverse, raising and lowering of the dump section and working headlights. Not obviously a space toy but this truck has a litho panel in the window depicting a robot driver, making it one of the earliest toys to have a robot theme.

Described as new in a 1932 catalog.
BULLDOZER WHICH A ROBOT OPERATES (BOX VERSION 1) - KKS - JAPANTin battery operated bulldozer with robot driver. This is an earlt version of Robotrac. See the other KKS (Komoda Shoten) box. This looks to be the earliest version. No reference to Robotrac on the box art. Bulldozer wording on the toy. Box depicts the blue version of the bulldozer.

Actions: Bulldozer moves in bump and go fashion as steering levers move back and forth creating the impression that robot driver is controlling the direction. The rear rubber tread wheels roll along the ground, which in turn cause the front tread wheels to turn, creating the impression that the bulldozer is being propelled by the rubber treads. Intermittently, the horn will sound and the light atop the robot's head will light.
Additional info.: Photo above depicts the yellow color variation. There is also a blue color variation. Variations to the lithography of the robot operator also exist. Stamped into the center of the bump and go plate on the bottom of the toy is the Linemar Toys logo and the word JAPAN.

The registration plate J1954 may suggest the date. The box art is classic in its design with no space connection. J.1954

This is similar to the TN Space Car, though there are slight differences in the design and litho.

CAPTAIN BOAT - MITSUHASHI - JAPANA brightly lithographed tinplate speedboat. 25cm Crank action drives the plastic propeller. A tin pilot head emerges from the top of this speedboat. A closer look reveals its Captain Scarlet connection: the letters SPV on the side, the circular Spectrum logo on the top and the name, Captain. Made by Mitsuhashi (M in a triangle) in the 1960s.

The design was later proiduced in Hungary as the Holdauto Space Car.

COMANDOS DEL ESPACIO 76 - EGE - SPAINA large lithographed tinplate and plastic space vehicle. 35cm. Pilot inside a square plastic canopy. The truck-like tracked vehicle has two large orange plastic doors on the top. These open to reveal a pair of red plastic guns. Battery operated bump and go action with lighted firing gun. This appears in the 1977 Ege catalog, though the name clearly suggests a 1976 date.
COMMAND CAR - EXELO - JAPANMetallic blue lithographed in friction space jeep. "Sparkling Friction Toy". Metal wheels. The tin driver is a military figure with white helmet rather than a spaceman. Gun mounted on the hood. Television wording on the back and TVN on the hood. Robot logo on the sides. Early style brown box with label, though there is no maker's mark on the box. The jeep is marked EXELO at the back. 16cm

Note that the litho indicates that a battey operated version may have been planned. The well at the back of the jeep could have held batteries.

The plane has a "jet action" which consists of small colored springs moving in and out of the engine ports. Pilot under a clear plastic cockpit. Friction action. Date? SN in a Circle logo.

CRAGSTAN SPACE MOBILE, LUNAR PATROL - CRAGSTAN - JAPANRed tinplate battery operated vehicle. This is a flat vehicle with a large square plastic canopy containing a tin pilot. Behind the canopy is a circular disc with colored gel divisions. The ship has two rear fins and a rotating metal antenna on a wire. The Space Mobile is marked Lunar Patrol on the sides. 10" 25cm long

The box art depicts an oval antenna but boxed examples seem to have the larger squarer antenna shown here.

Bump and go action with flashing lights and Roar R R noise. There is no obvious manufacturer's mark though the box has a Cragstan distributor's logo. On sale in December 1962
CRAGSTAN SPACE TANK, MARS PATROL NO 17 - YANOMAN - JAPANOrange-red and white lithographed tin friction spaceship with astronaut and spinning / rotating ball cockpit. 6.5" The tank has the familiar rounded shape with two fins at the back. At the front is a unique tin sphere which spins around to reveal a cockpit with tin astronaut driver. A metal panel is fitted to top rear, along with a wire antenna. Friction action with spinning ball cockpit and sparks. Marked Mars Patrol on the sides.

There are red and orange versions. The red (earlier?) version in the landscape picture box has two added silver metal parts on the upper front above the bumper. These are not present on the orange Cragstan plainer box version and are replaced by simple litho detail.

The box indicates a date of 1984-1988. Made by a Russian company with the stylized AM logo identified as the Leningrad Metalware Factory. Note the square or "boxy" shape of this version, compared with the rounder version.

Based on the Masudaya Lunar Expedition original, but the Lunar expedicion is slightly different: it has a clear EGE maker's mark, a NASA logo and has circular green plastic windows in sides and rear. (The Masudaya version has lithographed windows).
EXPLORATION TRAIN - SANKEI - JAPANA blue and silver lithographed tin battery operated space train comprising a futuristic engine and three carriages.

The rocket shaped engine has a red plastic dome at the front and tailfin at the rear. One carriage, the Transmitter Car, has a box like control center, the Radar Car carries a large dish antenna and the Missile Carrier car has a rocket mounted on the top. Twelve track sections provided.
