Electric Robot and Son Posted June 20, 2007 Share Posted June 20, 2007 I built this robot/costume for my son about 12 years ago for a halloween party at the Museum of Science in boston. It is not as high tech as some of the other robots you guys have built but it was very rewarding. The robot fit over Brian in his wheelchair. It has a wooden frame and thermoplastic panels for the front and side. It has plastic domes I bought at a surplus place on the front and for ears. It has circuit board photos from electronics magazines uder the chest domes. The clear head is made from a polaroid camera display case. The antenna on his head is a robotix piece inside a dome. The claws are also robotix. The antenna spins and the claws open and close from a remote I could activate when pushing the wheelchair. The arms and legs are dryer vent tubing and the feet are blocks of foam to go over his shoes. Of all the costumes my wife and I made for him this was his favorite. Two years later while my wife was working Brian and I went in to the Museum of science to enter a British airways competition to celebrate the Concrde's 25th anniversary. You had to come dressed as future space travellers. The competition was limited to 500 contestants and they were giving away 50 pair of airline tickets to London. (not on the concorde) As it turned out Brian and I each won a pair of tickets. We got home before my wife did and surprised her with our adventure story and the tickets. The following spring we went to England and went everywhere we could during our 12 day vacation. We toured much of london, went to stonehenge, wells castle, Sheakspeare's home and especially the flea markets in london.This was certainly the greatest vacation we ever had with Brian. We named the robot the London robot. and it now sits on a table in Brian's bed room. Hopefully I can get the pictures uploaded. These pics brought back memories of a robot costume my dad & I built in the early '60s, that won the town's Halloween costume contest that year. (Cedarburg, Wisconsin) Very similar look, except for the see thru head. Unfortunately, no pics survived. Years later, as a teenager in Arizona, I built a similar costume to wear while escorting my younger brothers trick-or-treating. Wasn't as much fun; little punks kept kicking the robot & trying to knock him down. Should have built a high voltage claw setup like the B9. (zaaaapppppsizzzzzle......take that, you little brats!) Sure,,,some here create robots and toys, but You went beyond and created a memory for a young boy that will last his entire lifetime !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Years from now he will say "Remember when Dad made [ME] a robot ?" OHHH dang it I'm going soft here. Where is my 30 mm A-10 depleted uranium shell I keep close by for when this happens. Eagle Posted June 21, 2007 Share Posted June 21, 2007 Costume parties reminds me of several events. One was the astronaut suit the wife and I built for our son when he was five. I have to dig up those photos. The other was,,,,,,,,,well now here is a story. I haven't told one in awhile. It was 1983 and I was the lead F-15 tech in Taif Saudi Arabia. Remember that was when they were on our side. Anyhow the activity directors on the compound were great and came up with some fantastic parties . The big one was the Halloween costume party. You all know that I collect toys, Ancient armor, vintage motorcycles,vintage boats bla bla bla. So I had to come up with a costume and it had to be cool. I'm riding thru the desert one day on my RM125 motocross bike and I come across a spool of aluminum flashing. Wow,what can I do with this ? Make a suit of Armor ,what else. So two weeks ,20 cuts and 500 rivets later here was the finished product. I couldn't sit down with it on, so friends of mine laid me across the tailgate of a blazer and drove me onto base. The guard at the base was a Sri Lanken that I knew. He walks around to the back of the Blazer and sees me . He screams [What is this]? I tell him ,it's me Mr Mark [as they called me] . He laughs and says pass through. WE won first place as Lance and Guenevere. We were up against heavy competition. Anyhow this was my first metal man ! Making this guy cost me 20 band aids . This is my two pennies worth of an attempt. First Recyclebot ever for me. All made out of recycled parts only.
