1960 - Astro Base By Ideal

Yes, yes, I know. Astro Base has already been TIMELINE dated to 1960 in a Sears Christmas Catalog. But, I just couldn't resist this full color picture of the toy in this catalog imprinted with the Bickels store name from Logansport, Indiana.

Until I saw the TV commercial for this toy I didn't realize how involved the actions are, with the astronaut that is lowered down into the vehicle which is a remote control toy all on it's own. This must be a difficult one to find MIB with all accessories intact.

Most interesting for robot collectors who own an Alps Rocket Man witout Rockets: The rockets of the Astro base (vehicle with rockets) are identical to the Rockets on the Rocket Man !!!

I actually had one of these as a kid. It was very impressive in size and had all the bells and whistles. It was neat how the door opened and the crane extended out, really cool toy. ^_^ Here are some webshots...
