Coronavirus And Collecting

Last night Teonia and I went to the grocery store for some apples..There were lots of apples but everything else was wiped out. The meat section consisted of prime cuts of beef and hundreds of lbs of corned beef [St Patricks ] One thing about this hoarding thing..You can look on the shelves and see what People DON"T like. Today I read that 8000 people have died worldwide..So I looked up world population..It stands at about 8,000,000,000. That's 8 Billion. So using a simple mathematical proportion ,,the death rate stands at 1 ten thousands of 1 percent..1/10,000 of 1% ..So that's a simple non political observation of the scope of things as of today..Someone double check my math,,,,Tht's a lot of zero's. 🤔

It's not the death rate that's the concern, Mark. It's hospitals being overrun with cases of a highly contagious virus plus all the other normal traffic they have. When is the last time you went to the hospital and got a bed right away? There are not enough beds or supplies to deal with it at this point in time. On top of that, the US is so behind with testing that it's almost impossible to track the spread and results.

The other thing is there are people who are in the high risk category such as my 90 year old dad. One ignorant millennial could be the angel of death in his retirement home. On top of that there are now reported cases of some millennial getting hit hard by the virus. Some people that survive the illness will have diminished lung capacity.

it looks right to me, 1/1,000,000 of the earths population have died so far, but only 216,852 cases (confirmed to date).  Thats  ~0.003% or 1 of 37,000 people have been infected.  and we're still at the beginning of this thing.  so if only 1% of our planet gets infected, that still puts us at almost 3 million deaths (given the current rates, that are likely to change as more tests find asymptomatic cases).  keep the old folks away from the general population.

Ok everyone is thinking of the old folks. But please also think about people with serious illnesses (cancer, long problems,....). They are also in danger. Also Children!!!

My colleague has a kid of 13 with cancer. They are stuck at home otherwise .....

And as Andyman pointed out the healthcare system can not handle this. Today I saw a video of an Italian hospital. EVERYWHERE people were lying on beds. In every corner of the hallways. If no more beds available .. they had to sit in wheelchairs. There are people with big jars, made out of glas, over their heads, in which they give the patients oxygen.

And if you want to the math in Italy?

In the area of Lombardia, at the moment:

17.713 have the virus

1.959 died.

The last time was Dec 28th Andy. When I had my heart attack. I walked in ,they ask me if they could help..I told them I was dying ..Boom I had a bed.. As far as the testing,,they are available now that private companies have taken it over from the government.  The economy is going to be the real victim. This hysteria is wiping out peoples entire life savings...People that played by the rules for 40 yrs. There isn't much that can be done once you have it. You either have slight symptoms or a little more severe or you die. There is no cure, there is no prevention. Other than isolation. My point is the media produced hysteria is doing far more damage than the actual illness . The test ,,,,1000 people were tested yesterday in PA and tested negative...So now what ,, 2 days from now they go back and get tested again and again and again ? So I'm in the prime risk group big time...I'm going to do what I can to prevent getting it,,,but in the end..when your time is up !! It is. It's not the Black death but if I get it,,there may be some custom robots at the estate sale. This is by majority a group of pretty damn logical people,,,and so I ask,,does this make any sense ?  Our hope lies with those nasty profit driven labs and pharmaceuticals ..I agree with you Andy,,I just think prevention for the most part is futile...Just my opinion..and probably a defective one..😆

My Grandparents survived the Great Depression, WWII, Polio, other various other out breaks.

...I choose to follow in their foot steps and get out of bed every day and face the world.☀️

Realistically we're looking at at least six months of turmoil, possibly much longer I can't see a quick way back to the good old days. Will collecting take a back seat to more important activities? The UK £ has just hit a 30 year low as money floods in to the safe haven US dollar. Gold will do its usual rise. What's the guess about toy collections?

Most of the toy robot collections are in the hands of us vulnerable old folks. The survivors can pick over the spoils at the upcoming auctions.  Be sure you soak the tainted toys in disinfectant before you put them up on your shelves. Good luck to us all (that's good luck in not getting sick, not getting cheap robots!)

Maybe a once in a lifetime question you ask Brian..Typically recessions or depressions have the most effect on mid level collection prices. Most people that collect at this level are effected the most by economic downturns. While their collections are a hard asset that they anticipate will appreciate in value over time, when there are layoffs or a savings collapse the collection becomes a liability rather than an asset. While the upper echelon isn't vulnerable , so the machine men and such don't correct like the rest of the market..There is always someone hanging around that has 80 grand of pocket change to spend on bragging rights. But this is a little different then a tech bubble bust...This is the first hysteria I have ever seen at this "world level" in my lifetime.. This could bankrupt entire countries..Or it could all be over in two months... What's your thoughts ? I think this forum is a great place to watch this play out due to the international membership.

I work for the DOD (US Navy) in a small Virginia town called Dahlgren; up till Monday it was business as usual although we stopped flying instructors out of/to Japan and Washington State a week or two before.  On Tuesday we were told we're teleworking every other day, keeping alternate people in the office at all times, but it was suddenly reversed with everyone told to telework for an unknown length of time.  My wife and I were looking to retire in about three years but our 401Ks are taking a beating, so those plans may be delayed.  Lastly, the store shelves remind me what would happen to this Country if Socialism took root, which seems to be a growing trend.

On the lighter side, I'm a Jiff peanut butter man and the only stuff left on the shelves yesterday was Peter Pan!  This is madness!

Stay safe and healthy everyone.

1 - do I wait for this to all blow over, because who in their right mind would be bidding on robots at a time like this, or

I was just saying to my gf that I wish I had some extra cash around for this quarantine as I think that it might be possible to get a deal or two at auction. So there are my thoughts on the subject.

Jeremy still has the bug.  The robot collecting bug and no other fortunately!

Ranger,

The robot collecting bug does have its side effects - withdrawal symptoms being one of them. We wish Jeremy a speedy recovery!

Similar stuff happening here, spending more time in the Robot/Model room lately.  Our world around us here has shut down, no planes (except for a big military prop plane yesterday circling the town) little traffic, nothing on the store shelves and few folks walking in the streets.

*Altaira has moved out to the far north while keeping her collections in the museum here at home, wants me to keep her 'bots running as much as I can manage.

Just like "Where is Everybody?" from the Twilight Zone.

Peace and safety be with everyone.

Oh, and ROBOTNUT did a fine restoration and rehab on my 1978 Seiko, THANKYOU DARRYL!
