For the Love of Box Art

I’m sure that we can all agree that one of the joys of collecting robots and space often comes from the amazing box art. I’m unsure if a thread has been previously dedicated to the subject. So, it might be nice to discuss the subject here.

What are some of your favorite boxes and artists? Of course we are familiar with Ken Netzel’s wonderful work on John’s past creations and Andy’s lovely art on his robots’ boxes. Also, I imagine that many of you are familiar with Greg Lunzer’s (AKA Plan3b here on the Drome) work on some of the Robot Island and Papa San robots among others. I see mention of Ray Gaedke in a recent thread by Zeitreisender as well. Who else deserves mention?

This topic idea stems from a recent addition to my collection that I received from Greg Lunzer which included a B9 repro and a Robbie repro which I believe were originally sold by Robot Island. What makes these additions exceptional in my opinion is that also included is Greg’s original painting done in watercolor and acrylic of his box art that appears on the box for the Robby repro called the Astro Planet Robot, which actually features both of the robots mentioned above. I am truly pleased to have this in my collection and grateful to Greg for parting with these items which he admits that he was partial to and reluctant to let go of. The photo doesn’t really do justice to this beautiful painting. The colors are even more striking in person.

The artwork on the Yonezawa Mechanical Moon Robot, AKA Ribbon Head is one my favourites, nice and simple but looks great stood on the Moon with our Earth in the background .

OK, just a couple for starters. Two of my favorites.

Two fantastic examples for sure Don! The colors on the saucer and the overall design of that one are simply breathtaking. I also love the personality that comes from the Robby in your Piston Action box.

My favorite Art Box would be this from Osaka with Robby the Robot with those Martian Invaders!!

What a masterpiece isn't it Roboto? I see the name Steve Q. on the box I think. Is anyone familiar with this artist or that are aware of any other boxes that he might have done the art for?

The Rohr Robby's art is among the best there is for sure.

Still love this Robby 'pinhead' boxtop.

Nice one Mike! Again great color scheme and I love the style that this particular Robby is illustrated in.

OK, here's some of my favorites.

In some cases its for what's pictured in the box, other cases the fun imagery, and others the story it reminds me of that lead to my possessing it.

yes, the last two are kind of rough, but were fun acquisitions.

How about a header card? The card on the right is one of my faves and very high on my want list.

There is also an extremely rare little box for this toy that is fantastic in my opinion. Sadly the one picture we had of it here on Alphadrome has gone missing (along with a lot of others I understand). I don't remember who posted it, but did anyone save it on their own computers at home?
