Robo Derby R1 Conversion

If you decide to do a electronic video viewer then what I have done in the past is use modified digital cameras in playback mode or any MP3 players that have video playback. In my case the last two projects I did this to I wanted a slide show and not video show and it worked out fine. The only trick is finding a mini video player "MP3 or camera" that will power up in play back mode. Back when I did this I had to build a custom start up circuit board to interface with the uints to make it work. I have also done mods with the rotating guts from old TV robots installed in them. So if you did your idea of a slide show by moving the film around that would be new and cool too see. Also you can find that I have done a lot of Kaleidoscope effect's using a stationary cut out in front of a rotating colored spiral design , that works well and by far the easiest way to go. Kind of a Robot 8 effect. I think you will figure out what will fit and work best for your project as you go along. This should be fun for you and interesting for us. Full steam a head.

I guess my favorite one was the one I build for Robert Lesser, there must be a botstock picture of it here some place.

Seems like it was Botstock 5 with RObert Lesser but I do not see pictures with the old BS threads so maybe there is not picture or video of the robot.

Thanks for your thoughts John. Much appreciated. I do recall the project that you did for displaying photos from the Hut using a repurposed camera. I still may go this direction. But, it might take a lot of research on my end to do it successfully. In the end, I think it feels more appropriate and more fun to go with something less modern. I also thought about trying to create a mutoscope device inside. But that seems like it would take up more room than I have to work with inside the R1. One other idea was to try and play a short clip of several frames from an old film and routing them through a series of pulleys to allow for a longer clip. But, I’m not sure that this is as simple as it seems in my mind. So I will likely go with more of a slide show effect. Here are a couple of images from the old film strip that I’m looking at using.

These are all great John. The Ackerbot is my favorite among them though. That one is quite beautiful and the pulp cover theme is a wonderful idea. I’m actually not sure that all of these made it into the project book on Ozzie’s FB group. I may have some work to do in that regard it seems.

You have me reconsidering the video function. But still I think it might be more fun to go with the fresh idea of using film.

Thanks again for the input John. It certainly cannot be argued that you are the authority on these conversions considering how many of them you have done.

Ok, I found a few small file images of the Robert Lesser robot from BS 3.

This is wonderful. The best part of the photos is the joy on Mr. Lesser’s face( I’m guessing that is him). Pretty much the same look that I have anytime I receive a package myself from the Hut. Well done John. Incidentally, I found this guy in the project book as well.BE8A3E9D-59CC-48EE-9E01-EAB8FC958B12.jpeg.7f808691d36898e3b8de67e871952537.jpeg

Yes!! As luck would have it, the lens from the slide viewer that I received today is nearly a perfect fit inside the tin tv frame and, should I decide to use the inner structure of the viewer, I can fit it into the R1 if I add something like oxygen tanks or a radio pack to the back to allow just a tiny bit more room.

Also, though it may not be my final choice in the end, the first of three film strips that I purchased arrived today. This one I purchased with no prior photos of the images contained on the strip. However, I am pleased with what I ended up with!

As I plan to add a sound card as well, I am also considering using the doors from the chest of a junk Attacking Martian below the video screen that will open to reveal some sort of speaker, preferably a miniature vintage loud speaker if I can find such a thing.

The image of the screen in the photo is backlit with a flashlight for now. But I have 4 led daylight colored chip lights on order to compare them against the single bulb that was originally installed in the slide viewer.

Prior to disassembling the viewer, I held the film strip in front of it and photographed more of the images that were on the strip.

I am really beginning to get excited about this build!

At the dollar store you can buy white LED flash lights, the newer ones have very bright COB type LED chips in them, for only a buck.

Excellent tip. Thank you John. I already have some on the way. But I will keep this in mind for future projects.

RoboDerby

I'm loving your imagination and old school approach to this project.

Sort of like the 50s 60s hot rod builders.

I am not doubting the finished robot will look fantastic and I am getting the feeling number one of many.

I haven't scrutinized all this thread so apologies if what I am about to suggest for a possible future project of yours has been mentioned earlier.

How about using the old space scene from a plastic Saturn robot or similar. I am not sure what the space scene mech would look like but perhaps it could be adapted to show an original design.

Anyway keep up with the good work. As much as I love and admire Brian's and other members 3D designs these 'scratch' (suck it and see) projects really intrigue me and have the added aspect of member contribution and criticism.

Thanks to everyone for the comments and suggestions. A couple of new ideas have come to mind. First of all, I have scratched the idea of using the visor as a “mouth” piece. I think this will look nicer if I craft something similar in tin. Also, I hope to be able to replicate in tin, the look of an old speaker like they used to have at the drive in theater that hangs in the car window. This piece I will place below the screen on the front of the skirt. I hope to have time tomorrow to begin cutting a hole in the chest of the R1 for the viewer lens and shaping the edges of the cut to fill the gaps between the R1 and the chest piece from the Horikawa.

Lens and chest piece installed!! Well, my first attempt at working the metal in the front of the R1 was a failure resulting in a trashed front half of the R1 and the need to disassemble a second R1 for another attempt. Luckily I bought 3 of them with the intention of converting.

I attacked the second R1 with another strategy for the design which I thought would result in a better outcome all around. Happy to say the result was a success. I have never worked with metal in this way, so I am admittedly quite proud of making the progress that I did today. Though it might not be the cleanest metal work, everything fits securely and any flaws in my technique are not visible once all is assembled.

Initially I had planned to work the metal on the R1 to fill the gaps between the contoured front of the R1 and the flat backside. After this proved a futile effort for someone of my inexperience, it occurred to me that it might work out better if I were to recess the chest piece into the body of the R1. Not only did this prove more achievable, it also brought the head back further over the shoulders. This too was an advantage of the new strategy as I had felt my first plan left the head to far forward to begin with. So here it is so far. I won’t bend any tabs into a locked position until after I have completed the mechanics inside and painted the pieces.

Next step will be to form a tin back piece that will allow me to fit the shell of the viewer inside the body and also give me a place to fasten the rear tabs on the base of the head. Then I will begin working on wiring and function. I am so pleased to have made it this far as I honestly wasn’t positive that I could pull off the metal work.
