David Boyle – Founder of Dapol

We know many of you ( including us) have fond memories of The Dapol Exhibition in Llangollen and the weird and wonderful figures which people still collect today. Many also have an interest in Model Railways, Dapol in its later years manufactured a Virgin Voyager that was named “Dr Who” (in real life). We have one of those as well.

David Boyle’s Partner has kindly sent us these words about David Boyle.

David Boyle passed away on 17th September…

He founded DAPOL model railways in 1983. For many years DAPOL had the licence from the BBC to manufacture Dr Who figures.

David also operated the Dr Who Exhibitions in Llangollen and Blackpool.

He spent his twilight years living in Lytham St Annes.

David was well known within his local community. He loved dressing up in his Red Indian outfit driving his beloved Dr Who car Bessie in the local carnival parades.

David was determined that when his time came he was making his final journey in style.

His TARDIS coffin was transported in a silver horse drawn hearse from our home in Lytham to St Cuthbert’s Parish Church where a public celebration of David’s life took place. When the cortège arrived at the crematorium gates a bag-piper led the procession playing ‘Amazing Grace’ and ‘Abide with me.’ David’s family said their final goodbyes to the original 1960s Dr Who theme tune.

New additions coming soon!

Out late December, the Doctor Who Figurine Collection part 166 features Magnus Greel from the 1977 Fourth Doctor adventure 'The Talons of Weng-Chiang'.

Magnus Greel was the Minister of Justice for the Supreme Alliance of Eastern States in the 51st century. When the Alliance fell, he became a wanted war criminal, escaping by using an experimental time cabinet. He went to the late 19th century China and then to London, where he continued his depraved activities on a smaller scale.

New look for the evil Dalek!!

Out mid-December, the Doctor Who Figurine Collection part 165 features Lin, the unfortunate victim of the Kaled mutant that has possessed her, just as they appeared in the Thirteenth Doctor New Year special, 'Resolution' (2019).

This terrifying mutant has particularly unusual abilities never seen on screen before. Able to survive outside of its casing, the mutant also has the abilities to latch onto a victim’s central nervous system and control it. We’ve seen Dalek puppets before, but the Reconnaissance Scout Dalek takes that to an entirely new level.

The 11th Doctor and the strange Eternal Dalek Yellow!!

Out late November, the Doctor Who Figurine Collection part 164 features the Dalek Eternal as it appeared in the Eleventh Doctor adventure, 'Victory of the Daleks' (2010). In its bright yellow and black livery, there had never been a Dalek like it before.

Although the days of the New Paradigm Daleks seem to have passed, this particular Dalek has retained a strange level of intrigue. No one could ever answer: what does ‘Dalek Eternal’ mean?

Cybermats

From ‘The Tomb of the Cybermen’ 1967

“Release the Cybermats.  We will use the power of cybermetics ”

The Doctor and his companions Jamie and Victoria arrive on the planet Telos where an Earth archaeological expedition, led by Professor Parry, is attempting to uncover the ancient City of Telos and the tombs of the Cybermen. The Cybermen have apparently been extinct for centuries and when the entrance to the ancient tombs is successfully located, the Doctor reluctantly aids the archaeologists in gaining entry.

Once inside, the financial sponsor of the expedition, Klieg, reveals himself and his business partner, Kaftan, to be planning to revive the Cybermen. He wants to use their strength, allied with the intelligence of his own Brotherhood of Logicians, to create an invincible force for conquest.

It transpires however that the tomb is actually a giant trap designed to lure humans suitable for conversion into further Cybermen - a fate that almost befalls Kaftan's assistant Toberman. After fending off an attack by Cybermats - small but dangerous cybernetic creatures - the Doctor eventually defeats the revived Cybermen, led by their Controller, and reseals the tombs.
